Cartesian axes and representation of points in the plane

Describe how to place a point in the coordinates axes. Then say what the horizontal and vertical axes are called.

Theoretical exercise.

To place a point $P=(a, b)$ in the plane, the procedure to follow is the following one:

  1. We draw a coordinates axes.
  2. We place point $a$ in the horizontal axis and point $b$ in the vertical axis.
  3. We draw straight lines perpendicular to the axes for $a$ and for $b$.
  4. The intersection of the previous perpendicular lines is point $P$.

The horizontal axis is called the abscissa axis. The vertical axis is called the ordinates axis.
